Charlotte Pavilion

Location: Charlotte, NC

Client: Independent Economic Development Group – Charlotte, NC

Project Team:
David S. Tobin, AIA, Principal

Program:

A small, semi-permanent, pavilion/folly for the presentation of multi-media programming, to be installed in prominent public movement or gathering locations such as Urban Centers, Convention Center Exhibit Spaces and Lobbies, Arenas, etc.

Solution:

This pavilion concept study was initiated and developed through discussions with a group of Charlotte business leaders centered around a dynamic economic development attraction designed to present multimedia content. Emphasizing local cultural offerings and character in Charlotte and its region, a diversity of programming themes would include business, history, arts, music, theater, sports, food, and hospitality.

This design concept proposes a jewel-like pavilion enclosure built with modular tetrahedral components arranged in a roughly cubic form, creating a visually entertaining and flexible structure that can be easily assembled and disassembled as required. The exterior surfaces and interior space would allow for simple adjustments to internally accommodate various exhibit configurations for lighting, sound, and media displays, for 15-20 attendees at a time.
